The end of the year celebration

Thriving through the break: A 5-step guide to recharge your soul

By Kimine Mayuzumi

As the winter break unfolds (or perhaps it’s already in full swing), I wanted to take a moment to share five key recommendations and reminders to help you seamlessly transition from the rigors of the past term to a well-deserved period of rejuvenation.

1. Reflect on the term

Take a moment to celebrate your accomplishments, both professional and personal. Whether it’s teaching engaging classes, completing challenging coursework, or reclaiming your health, each achievement deserves acknowledgment. Approach this reflection with compassion and kindness towards yourself – treat your inner self like a cherished little child. Attached are Resource Sheets to guide you through this reflective journey.

2. Claim downtime and care for yourself

The holiday season can be hectic, even when surrounded by loved ones. Remember the airplane analogy: secure your own oxygen mask before assisting others. Make a commitment to exquisite self-care. Even if you’re focused on caring for others, ensure you prioritize your well-being. Your ongoing self-care is paramount!

3. Set boundaries

Meaningful downtime requires boundaries. Learn to gracefully say “no” to new requests and clearly communicate your availability to colleagues and loved ones. Consider setting up an auto-reply in your email to signal that you’re taking a well-deserved break.

4. Create a gratitude list

Embrace the power of gratitude by crafting and maintaining a list of even the smallest joys in your life. From the simple gift of breath to shared laughter with family, acknowledging these moments fosters positive energy and cultivates an abundance mindset.

5. Try unplugging

Give yourself the gift of a digital detox. Break free from constant screen time, particularly on smart devices and computers. The pervasive digital lifestyle can take a toll on mental and physical wellbeing. Consider reviewing your digital habits to ensure a conscious and mindful approach.

Attached below are Resource Sheets in PDF format designed to facilitate reflection on the academic term. They are crafted to be concise yet effective, providing relevant prompts for thoughtful contemplation. You may share the reflection activity with your loved ones too.
